If you’re reading this, you’ve already taken an important step towards getting support at home by applying for a My Aged Care assessment — well done. The aged care system can feel overwhelming, and reaching this point shows real commitment to maintaining your independence and wellbeing at home.

After submitting your application, you may wait around 4–6 weeks before your assessment is scheduled. My Aged Care will contact you to arrange a suitable time. Assessments may be conducted in person, over the phone, or via video call, depending on your situation.

Choose a Support Person

You’re welcome to have a support person with you during your My Aged Care assessment. This could be a family member, friend, or carer — someone who understands your day-to-day needs and can help you speak up about what matters most to you.

If you don’t have someone available, you can access a free aged care advocate through the National Aged Care Advocacy program. Call 1800 700 600 for support.

Speak With Your GP About Your Care Needs

Your assessor will need a clear picture of your health, mobility, and ongoing care requirements to determine what support you may be eligible for at home.

Before your assessment, consider booking a GP appointment and ask for:

  • A summary of your current medical conditions
  • Information about treatments, medications, or care plans
  • Any referrals or reports relevant to your daily living needs

Bring this information to your assessment and have your GP’s contact details ready.

Gather Important Documents

Having the right paperwork organised can help avoid delays. You’ll need:

  • Your Medicare card
  • Another form of identification (such as a driver’s licence, passport, or birth certificate)
  • Any documents related to existing supports, including privately arranged services

Think About the Support You Want at Home

Your assessment is about you — your lifestyle, preferences, and goals. Take some time to think about the kind of support that would help you live well at home.

  • Personal care
  • Domestic assistance
  • Nursing or allied health support
  • Social support or companionship

You may also wish to ask about choosing your own provider, including trusted local organisations like
