Respite Care in Canberra for Carers and Families
Respite care gives Family Carers a genuine break while the person they care for continues to receive skilled, familiar support at home. Just Better Care Canberra & South Coast provides respite on a planned, occasional or as-needed basis, from a few hours so you can get to an appointment, through to overnight and extended cover when you need to travel or recover.
Respite support in home
Caring for someone is rewarding, and it is also relentless. Most of the Carers we work with in Canberra tell us the same thing: they do not want to hand their person over to a stranger in an unfamiliar building. Our respite support happens in the home, with a small, consistent team who already know the routine, the preferences and the small details that make a day go smoothly.
Respite can look like a Support Worker preparing meals together, taking someone shopping in Woden or Belconnen, helping them get to a social event or a medical appointment, or simply keeping company and taking care of tasks around the home while you have some time to yourself. For customers registered for the Support at Home program, respite may be funded through your plan. Self-funded respite is also available through Just Better Care Private with no waiting list.
Support at Home in Canberra and What the Program Covers
The Australian Government's Support at Home program replaced the Home Care Package program on 1 November 2025. Just Better Care Canberra & South Coast is proud to be an approved Support at Home provider, supporting customers across Belconnen, Gungahlin, the inner north and south, Woden Valley, Weston Creek, Tuggeranong, Queanbeyan and out to the South Coast.
Support at Home service list
The Support at Home service lists groups funded support into three categories:
- Clinical care services— nursing, wound care, medication support, continence support and allied health coordination.
- Independence services— personal care, help with mobility, transport, respite for Carers, social support and community participation.
- Everyday living services— domestic assistance, meal preparation, shopping, home maintenance and garden care.
Our local office team meets with you, your Family and any advocate you choose, walks you through how the program works, and builds an ongoing schedule of support services from clinical nursing through to help around the home.
