The Australian Government partly funds a range of aged care programs to help older Australians live safely and independently at home. These include Support at Home (SAH) and the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), along with other funded services that may vary depending on your local Just Better Care office.
Whether you receive Support at Home services or support through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) depends on your individual assessed needs. During your My Aged Care assessment, your care requirements will be reviewed to determine the most suitable level of support. If deemed eligible, you may receive CHSP funding for lower-level support or a Support at Home classification to access a range of ongoing services and/or short-term support services. The letter of determination that you receive will determine the level of subsidy for each service.
The Australian Government’s new Support at Home program launched on 1 November. This new approach will make it easier for older Australians to access the right level of care, at the right time, with more flexibility and choice. Learn more on our Support at Home page.

Attendant care is usually long term and can include daytime or overnight support, depending on your needs.
Post-acute support is usually for people who need temporary or short-term support. Your hospital or treating team will recommend that you need help with personal care and everyday tasks, such as shopping and banking, after you are discharged back home.
The local Just Better Care office will then work with your treating team to make sure you get the help you need.
If you’re a senior veteran or a war widow/widower, a range of aged care services are available such as domestic assistance, personal care, respite services and more.
To receive these services, you will need to have an assessment. You may be eligible for other programs or packages if you are not eligible for the VHC Program.
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Community Nursing services help eligible DVA clients receive health care and personal care services to meet clinical needs. Nursing services are provided by nursing staff. Ask your local Just Better Care office for more information about your specific circumstances.
Just Better Care is a registered provider of the new Support at Home program that launched 1st November, a new approach to aged care in Australia
The Just Better Care team is always there when we need them. They’re responsive, reliable, and genuinely care – qualities that make all the difference.
From day one, the Just Better Care team felt more like extended family than staff. They truly understand my needs and treat me with respect and dignity every visit.
Living with a disability doesn’t stop me from living my best life, thanks to the amazing support from Just Better Care. They help me to stay independent and active in my local community.
The Support at Home program delivers government-funded aged care services to help older people to stay at home for longer. On 1 November 2025, it replaced the Home Care Packages Program and Short-Term Restorative Care Programme. The previously named Commonwealth Home Support Programme remains in place to provide support for people with lower-level needs.
An assessment from My Aged Care determines these needs. However, you must also be:
If you only need a little support, like one or two services, you might not need Support at Home. You may be more suited for help at home through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme. Both programs aim to help you stay independent and live comfortably in your own home.
Support at Home will have eight ongoing service classifications, each with a budget for them to access services. Participants can request a reassessment if their needs change.
This includes support for:
Clinical Care
Such as nursing care, occupational therapy and continence care.
Independence
Such as help with showering, getting dressed, taking medications, transport or respite care.
Everyday living
Such as cleaning, gardening, shopping or meal preparation.
Short-term supports
Restorative, palliative, and assistive technology home modifications.
Care management
Guidance, planning, oversight and coordination of support services.
To access government-funded aged care services, first check your eligibility for an assessment. Visit My Aged Care or call 1800 200 422.
If you’re assessed as eligible for the Support at Home program, you’ll receive a Notice of Decision and a Support Plan to share with your provider.
Your Support Plan includes a summary of your care needs and goals, your classification with a set quarterly budget and list of approved services, and details of any short-term supports you’re eligible for.
If you’re already on the National Priority System (waiting for a Home Care Package), you’ll automatically receive a Support at Home classification when a place is available. A new assessment isn’t required unless your needs change.
Self-management continues under Support at Home. You can choose to organise and schedule your own services, select your preferred workers, manage your budget, and handle payments and reimbursements yourself.
Your self-management arrangements must be agreed with your Support at Home provider and included in your care plan. You can only spend your budget on services that are in your support plan and on the approved service list.Note: Whether you self-manage or not, you must have a care management provider. If you receive ongoing services, 10% of your budget will be allocated to care management each quarter.
Under the new Aged Care Act, your provider must engage third-party workers directly or via an associated provider and is responsible for all workers delivering services to you (including third parties). Providers must ensure workers meet workforce and registration requirements.
In some cases, your provider may not be able to agree to specific workers or third-party arrangements if regulatory requirements or provider obligations can’t be met.
As our parents age, ensuring their well-being and comfort becomes increasingly important. Just Better Care offers a valuable solution, allowing your parents to remain in the familiar surroundings of their own homes while receiving a range of home care services. These services are incredibly flexible, from assistance with daily tasks like bathing and dressing to skilled nursing care and companionship, allowing you to tailor the care to your parents' needs.
When selecting a home care provider, it's essential to consider your parents' specific needs and preferences. Remember, they are the ones who will be receiving the care, so their comfort and preferences should be at the forefront of your decision. Look for a provider that can cater to particular areas, such as aged care, dementia care and community participation services.
It's also crucial to check that the provider rigorously screens their team members as you are entrusting your loved one to their care.
By carefully evaluating, you can find the ideal home care solution that respects your parents' wishes, enhances their quality of life, and provides peace of mind for the entire family.

A cancellation fee applies in some circumstances. Wherever possible, we ask that at least 24 hours notice is given when you need to cancel your service. If you cancel within 24 hours, you may incur a cancellation fee.
If you don't feel comfortable with the people who visit you, please let the Service Coordinator know so we can arrange different support staff. If you are unhappy with any of the services you receive, let us know so we can implement changes and improvements.
Support staff are required to call coordinators when they have concerns for a customer's wellbeing or if an incident occurs. Examples of reasons when a staff member would need to contact the office include:
All Just Better Care staff are thoroughly screened (including undertaking a variety of background screenings and references). Every staff member is reliable, well-trained and trustworthy. Each staff member also carries a Just Better Care issued photo ID with their name, photo, and office contact details.
If the extra task can be completed safely and within the time allocated for the service, your staff member may be able to assist. Some aged care programs are restricted; please call your local Just Better Care office if you are unsure.
Services can only go ahead if you are at home. Please let the office know if you won't be home for a service so it can be rescheduled. If you don't notify the office, you may still have to pay for the service.
We will discuss with you any services with you that fall on a public holiday. If you prefer, your service could potentially be moved to a different day; just let us know.

Our support services are flexible, available as a one-off, short-term, or ongoing care arrangement, and are tailored to your personal preferences and budget. If you require services immediately, talk to your local Just Better Care office about private or self-funded in-home care.
The Support at Home service list is divided into three categories: Clinical Care, Independence Support, and Everyday Living. Each category includes specific service types, with different contribution requirements for participants.
It’s important to note that services are not automatically provided. Eligibility and allocation of Support at Home services are determined by an independent assessor and reflected in your notice of decision.
The service list outlines both included and excluded services for each type of care.
My Aged Care is a free service that provides information and support for older people and their families to navigate the Australian government's aged care system:.
My Aged Care provides a range of general information about aged care services, aimed at family members and friends caring for a person aged 65 years and over (or 50 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people). For more information about My Aged Care, you can call them directly on 1800 200 422, visit their website or speak with your local Just Better Care office.
Some of your aged care costs will depend on your financial situation, and you may be eligible for government assistance if your income and assets are below a certain level.
For most people, the income and assets assessment is done by Services Australia. However, if you receive a means-tested payment from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), they will do the assessment. Once your assessment is complete, Services Australia will send you a fee advice letter outlining what you will need to contribute towards your services. You can get your income and assets assessed at any time, even before you enter care. However, your fee advice letter is only valid for 120 days from the date of your assessment.
Completing an income and assets assessment isn't mandatory. However, if you choose not to complete one, you can be asked to pay the maximum contribution rate.
The first step to access government-funded aged care services is to get assessed. You can apply for an assessment online or call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.
The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is Australia’s national program that provides funding to people with disability to help them live more independently and achieve their goals.
Funding is provided directly to participants, who can choose how to use it to support their needs — such as daily living assistance, therapies, or community participation.
Selected Just Better Care locations are registered NDIS providers, offering personalised support to help participants with their everyday needs and to make the most of their NDIS plan.
