Just Better Care Brisbane South and East Owner, Oday gives this advice to new Just Better Care franchisees.
As one of the newer additions to the Just Better Care team, he recently acquired a second territory to accompany his Brisbane office after only 18 months as franchise owner.
For Oday, his vision was to build a successful business that would allow him to mix with the community, making a positive impact through information, support and personalised service.
Oday’s professionalism together with a genuine interest in his customers are his secret weapons. Combining a background in disability with a genuine interest in people, he explained that finding a connection to each customer is the key to a thriving business.
“I take it personally,” he said. “It’s the thing that keeps me going.”
He said that it is important that customers feel like there is someone they can talk to, especially as home-care packages become more self-directed and individualised.
With so many care paths, Oday said there’s a need to go to communities, meet them and help them with package options.
“Getting support can be a big transition for some people – they can feel as though they are losing independence – so you need to make sure they feel comfortable and supported,” he said.
Oday started assisting 12 customers in the first six months of operation. From there, building relationships and word of mouth became a marketing tool that lead to additional customers.
He said visiting local mosques and churches, speaking at community events, and sitting down with families to discuss the needs of older members in his community, is just part of the job.
“It’s setting up the foundations so that customers can call me in six or seven months.”
Like any small business, he said that a solid business strategy and a willingness to learn has also been paramount to his franchise’s success.
But ultimately, Oday abides by one simple ethos. “Build relationships to build business and increase home care packages,” he said.
Oday’s and his team’s customer retention rates is proof of their success. “We haven’t had one client that has stopped their service,” he said. Just Better Care was Oday’s first franchise venture within the disability sector, after a successful career as a carer in New Zealand.
“Initially I thought I would go into business myself, but I quickly realised there were less complicated alternatives,” he said.
Just Better Care provided Oday with a helping hand to set-up of his new business. It was exactly what he needed to make his mark on the Brisbane care industry.
Oday was impressed with Just Better Care’s professionalism and openness from the beginning.
“They were straightforward. They told me things exactly as they are. I liked that,” he said.
His hard work has paid off, with Oday recently expanding his office to include an additional Brisbane territory.
The team of six has expanded its area of care. “Now we look after both territories, but from a business point of view it’s structured as a single entity.”
The expansion has helped the team rise to new challenges, restructuring to work with the NDIS, and providing the push to achieve set goals every quarter.
With 24 home care packages underway and more in the works, this Just Better Care achiever has some simple final words of advice for prospective franchisees.
“Stay busy and build relationships while you’re waiting!” he said.
