The beginning of the year is a natural time to reassess what’s working and what isn’t — including your in-home aged care arrangements.
The beginning of the year is a great time to re-evaluate things that may or may not be working for you, including your in-home aged care arrangements.
Not everyone enjoys change, especially when it concerns the people entrusted with your home care service.
Your needs may have changed, you might require services your current provider doesn’t offer, you may have moved to a new area, or you may feel you’re not receiving good value for money.
The reality is that with so many aged care providers in Australia, your first provider may no longer be the right fit.
The good news is that while changing home care providers can be daunting, it is also far easier than you may think. With the right steps, it can be managed smoothly and with minimal disruption to your care.
Talk it through
The first step when considering changing your in-home aged care provider is to speak with your current provider.
Under your rights with the Aged Care Act, providers must respect your rights and deliver quality services. Raising concerns may result in small but meaningful adjustments to your care plan, communication or scheduling.
If service limitations are the issue, your provider may recommend a suitable alternative in your area.
Do your research
If you decide to move forward, search for providers in your area that meet your specific requirements.
Create a shortlist based on availability, staff consistency, cost transparency and experience in your area of need.
Have direct conversations with providers to understand how they manage staffing, communication and continuity of care.
Finalising your exit
Once you choose a new provider, you’ll need to give notice to your current one. Exit dates and final costs must be agreed upon.
Your provider has 28 days to notify Services Australia of your departure and must cooperate fully with the transition.
A smooth transition
Work closely with your new provider to schedule your first visit as close as possible to your final day with your previous provider.
Administrative setup is often handled by the new provider and can usually be completed within a few days.
Things to look out for
Review your service agreement carefully and keep a simple written record of your current services, including days, times and tasks.
Confirm your new provider’s start date in writing to avoid gaps in care.
In-home aged care works best when it’s built around you. Open communication helps create the experience that suits your needs.
