A Life-Changing Accident
Just five days before their wedding, Chris experienced a devastating fall from his verandah that resulted in spinal and head injuries, leaving him a paraplegic.
Chris, who had lived with epilepsy since childhood, was no stranger to health challenges. But this moment changed everything. Linda, his fiancée, made the immediate decision to leave her job to become his full-time carer.
“That was the day our lives changed forever. Cancelling the wedding was the least of our worries,” Linda said.
Hospital Rehabilitation & Returning Home
After six months in hospital undergoing intensive rehabilitation, Chris and Linda returned home to rebuild their life together. Home care became essential to this transition, with support that included:
Redefining Love: The Wedding That Waited
One year after the accident, Chris and Linda tied the knot in a backyard ceremony surrounded by close friends and family.
“It was cold, but perfect. I was finally marrying Chris,” said Linda.
It wasn’t the wedding they had originally planned—but it was filled with more love, strength, and gratitude than they could have imagined.
Finding Purpose Post-Accident
Before the accident, Chris was an avid rock ‘n’ roll dancer and active community member. Accepting the new limitations wasn’t easy, but he and Linda found ways to stay connected to their passions—especially music.
“We still bop our heads along to the music. Chris makes everything fun,” Linda said.
Adapting routines and rediscovering purpose has become a central part of their new normal.
The Role of In-Home Disability Support
As Chris’s confidence grew, so did his desire to reconnect with his community. Linda reached out to Just Better Care for additional support—and never looked back.
“Lana, the owner, made me feel so supported. They’ve become part of our family,” Linda shared.
With personalised disability support services from Just Better Care, Chris now:

Moving Forward, Together
Today, Chris and Linda live in Ingleburn with Linda’s son, seven cats, and their pug Dakota. Their home is full of warmth, love, and laughter.
“New Zealand was just the start of our adventures. We’ve had bumps along the way, but we’ve found our rhythm.”
With the right support, anything is possible. Chris continues to test his limits and rediscover what makes life fulfilling—on his terms.
