Finding Joy in Everyday Moments: David’s Story

On a rainy afternoon at a local café, David sat with his Support Worker, Elena, to reflect on the simple pleasures that shape his life—music, travel and daily walks by the beach—and the routines that help him thrive.

Life by the ocean

Born in Crows Nest, David’s family moved to the Northern Beaches in 1963, drawn to the fresh air and coastal lifestyle. He remembers carefree days at kindergarten, playing outdoors and a home filled with animals—five dogs over the years. His favourite was Zeus, a lively foxhound–Labrador mix. “He was a big dog with a big personality,” David recalls.

Music that lasts a lifetime

Music has been a constant since David first picked up a guitar at nine. Over time, he added piano and ukulele. At his retirement village, he enjoys practising on the upright piano and performing at morning teas. “It is wonderful to share music with everyone,” he says.

Work and family values

Though he once imagined office work, David spent years alongside his father in the family factory. The experience shaped his appreciation for hard work, responsibility and family commitment.

Adventures near and far

Travel has brought David great joy. With his family, he explored New Zealand, England, the United States, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan and much of Europe. In the US he visited Florida, California, Washington, Chicago and Boston; in Europe he enjoyed Germany, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. A favourite memory remains a family drive to Port Stephens at age 15. “Travel gave me many great memories,” he says.

Enjoying life today

These days, David continues the activities that make him happiest: playing guitar, ukulele and piano; swimming regularly; walking daily; reading; watching television; and listening to his large CD collection. Among his favourite books is The Magic Pudding by Norman Lindsay, loved for its humour and quirky characters.

A remarkable health journey

One of David’s greatest achievements has been his health transformation. When he began working with Just Better Care Northern Beaches & Northern Suburbs in 2013, he weighed 186 kilos. Through swimming, walking, exercise and healthier eating, he reduced his weight to 84 kilos and hopes to reach 80. “It has been a long journey, but I am proud of what I have achieved,” he says.

Looking ahead with positivity

David’s advice for younger people is simple: “Take care of yourself. Stay active, eat well, love yourself and look after your health.” He looks forward to continuing music, swimming, walking and joining outings with the Up and Over group—staying curious and learning new skills along the way.

Support that makes a difference

For more than a decade, David has valued the consistent support of Just Better Care Northern Beaches & Northern Suburbs. “The team helps me with everyday tasks like cooking, outings and staying on track with my health goals,” he says. He describes his Support Worker Elena as a steady presence over nearly 10 years, and praises Office Coordinator Leanne’s kindness and patience in helping him stay connected to the community. Susie, After Hours Coordinator, also provides weekend support—making sure David always feels cared for.

“When the sun shines, that makes me happy. Life is about simple joys, keeping active and being around good people.”
