Joy, a cherished client of Just Better Care Northern Beaches and Northern Suburbs, is living proof that age is no barrier to creativity, connection, and resilience. Her remarkable journey captures what it means to age well at home in the heart of Sydney’s Northern Beaches community.

Growing Up with Resilience

Born between two world wars, Joy grew up in a time of simplicity and family warmth, yet limited opportunities for young women. “We did not know what was going on in the world — and we were not meant to,” she recalls. Despite the constraints of her era, Joy nurtured curiosity and a love of storytelling that would shape her life.

Adventure and Exploration

In her early twenties, Joy chose adventure over convention. Determined to see the world, she worked multiple jobs to pay for her ship passage to Europe. “Travelling changed me,” she says. “I met people who had been through so much. I came back a very different young woman.”

After returning to Sydney, she married and built a life rooted in love, family, and shared exploration, all while maintaining her adventurous outlook.

A Creative Spirit That Never Fades

Art, poetry, and design were constants in Joy’s life. She painted, studied interior decoration, and built a career once her children were grown. At 98, she fulfilled a lifelong ambition by publishing her first book of poetry — a thoughtful collection written for women and her family.

“I have been writing since I was a little girl,” Joy reflects. “It felt like the right time to share.”

Staying Active and Independent

Even after surviving a heart attack, Joy embraced her wellbeing with determination. With support from her trainer and her Just Better Care team, she began Pilates classes, which she still attends twice weekly. “I am often tired after the sessions,” she says, “but always feel better for doing it.”

Her philosophy on ageing is grounded in simple truths: “I have never smoked, never really drank, and I have only ever had one partner in life. I have just got on with it.”

The Role of Community and Care

For Joy, independence is balanced with the companionship and support she receives from Just Better Care Northern Beaches

“The carers make a huge difference,” she says. “They brighten my day. They come in with fresh ideas, share stories, and help me stay engaged. Without them, I would be much lonelier.”

From Manly to Dee Why, Narrabeen to Palm Beach, Just Better Care helps locals like Joy stay connected, independent, and supported in their own homes.

Ageing Well on the Northern Beaches

Joy’s message is simple: keep moving forward, embrace change, and find joy in everyday moments. “Children make me laugh. There is always something to smile about if you are paying attention.”

With four generations of family — children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren — and the continued support of her local care team, Joy is looking ahead with optimism. “Someone once told me I’d live to 104. So that is what I am aiming for.
