Shirley: A Life of Creativity, Independence and Heart

At 91, Shirley continues to inspire everyone around her with her creativity, resilience and independent spirit. Born in Chatswood and raised in a family where practical skills and self reliance were deeply valued, Shirley learned from an early age the importance of doing things for yourself, being independent.

Whilst always having a passion for art, it was not until her 40s that she had the opportunity to study art seriously. She enrolled in Drawing and Painting classes and, after retirement, Botanical Art and Cartooning. What began as a lifelong interest became a lifelong creative journey filled with painting, exhibitions and award winning artwork.

Louie the Poodle and a New Creative Chapter

Some of Shirley's most treasured projects were inspired by her beloved black poodle, Louie. After his passing, Shirley began writing and illustrating comic style stories based on his funny adventures and unique personality. Through these stories, Louie became more than a pet. He became a character full of humour, charm and mischief.

Support That Helps Maintain Independence

Today, Shirley continues living independently in her own home with support from Just Better Care Northern Beaches and Northern Suburbs Support Workers, who assist her with shopping, appointments and everyday tasks. Their support helps Shirley maintain the lifestyle, routine and independence that remain so important to her.

Advice for Younger Generations

One message Shirley continues to share with younger generations is the importance of independence and lifelong learning.

"Maintain your independence. Educate yourself all your life."
