The number of occupational therapists in Australia increased more than 60 percent over the decade from 2014 to 2023.
While there are many reasons for this, chief among them is the undeniable fact that there is increasing demand for their services, particularly among NDIS clients.
But what makes OTs so popular and what assistance can they provide to improve the lives of those living with disability?
What is occupational therapy?
The core role of an OT is to help you develop the skills or access the tools needed to improve your quality of life.
According to the peak professional body for OTs, Occupational Therapists Australia, this could involve taking care of yourself or others, working, volunteering and participating in interests and social events that offer personal or professional fulfilment.
OTs can also help you recover after an illness or injury, assist with home or vehicle modifications and help you access equipment to maintain your independence. They can also help those who have difficulty managing their fatigue and those living with arthritis, cancer, diabetes, neurological conditions and other long-term health issues.
What to expect during an OT assessment?
Occupational therapy assessments are used by OTs to determine your ability to complete everyday tasks, including your strengths and weaknesses.
The NDIS planning process may vary from person to person, but generally it will involve creating a plan outlining your goals and the supports required to achieve them, including OT services.
It may include some or all of the following:
- Functional Capacity Assessments that evaluate your ability to perform work-related tasks.
- Sensory Assessments that assess how sensory processing issues affect daily activities.
- Home Safety Assessments that evaluate the safety and accessibility of the home environment.
- Cognitive Assessments that evaluate your cognitive functions like memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.
What to consider when choosing a NDIS-approved OT?
Choosing the right OT is critical to your therapy, so it’s important to get it right when it comes to the skills base and personal demeanour of the OT you select.
Ideally you will want to find someone with whom you can verify their NDIS registration, who has a proven track record in working with individuals with needs similar to your own and who specialise in areas relevant to your particular requirements as they are likely to have a better understanding of the challenges you face.
Remember to consider feedback from previous clients in your selection of a suitable OT and investigate whether they provide or recommend resources for additional support outside of therapy sessions,
Aside from your OT’s professional pre-requisites, it’s also important to look for someone with whom you are easily able to develop a rapport as this could greatly enhance your therapy outcomes.
Remember occupational therapy looks differently for everyone. How long you will need to see your OT will depend entirely on your individual needs and the speed at which you progress.
