Finding Creative Freedom in Illawarra: Glen’s Artistic Journey After Relocating from Sydney
The dramatic coastline of North Wollongong, nestled in the heart of the Illawarra region of New South Wales, offers more than just breathtaking views — it inspires creativity and a renewed sense of peace. For Glen, a passionate painter living with an acquired disability, this region has become the canvas for a new chapter in life.
After moving from Sydney 14 months ago with his family, Glen has found that the slower pace and stunning natural beauty of Wollongong are the perfect backdrop for exploring his creativity through art.
“Sydney was too hectic for us and we decided a change would be good,” says Glen’s sister Brenda. “He’s settled in so well here.”
Glen, now 51, lives with the long-term effects of severe brain inflammation from childhood. Yet, he continues to embrace life and his creative passions with resilience and joy.
Since relocating, Glen has joined Outsider Artists, a weekly art group run by Greenacres, a local support organisation for people with disability. Through art classes and a supportive creative community, Glen has made new friends and reignited his love of painting — particularly his favourite subjects: birds and nature.
“My art teacher is amazing,” Glen shares. “She teaches nearly 100 students every week and has built a beautiful, supportive art community.”
After each class, Glen and his classmates often gather at local coffee shops, blending creativity with connection. These outings are made easier thanks to the support he receives from Just Better Care Illawarra, where he’s been a client since 2019. His Support Professional assists with daily tasks and accompanies him on social outings, giving Glen greater independence and confidence.
“There was nothing like the Outsider Artists group even back in Sydney,” Brenda says. “He’s learning more about art and he really enjoys the social side of things too.”
Living in Wollongong has allowed Glen to focus on his goals. One of them? Exhibiting four original paintings in the upcoming Greenacres art show.
“Last year I sold three paintings, which was amazing,” Glen says with a smile. “This year, I’m just as excited to show my work — but also to see what my friends create.”
Glen’s story is a reminder that art, community, and the right support can empower individuals with disability to thrive. And in the inspiring landscapes of the Illawarra, every day brings a new reason to paint.
