June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, a time when Australians are encouraged to learn about early detection, take proactive steps for prevention, and support the life-saving work of Bowel Cancer Australia.
At Just Better Care, we believe every Australian deserves the opportunity to live well at home — especially when managing health challenges like bowel cancer. That’s why our local Support Workers are passionate about helping people access the care and support they need, when and where they need it most.
Why Bowel Cancer Awareness Matters
Bowel cancer is the second deadliest cancer in Australia, affecting around 15,000 people each year. Alarmingly, more than 160,000 Australians are currently living with or beyond a bowel cancer diagnosis.
While it can affect people of all ages, the majority of cases are diagnosed in those aged 50 and over. The good news? Most bowel cancers can be successfully treated when detected early. That’s why awareness and regular screening are so important.
Spotting the Signs Early
Common symptoms may include:
- Persistent changes in bowel habits
- Blood in the stool
- Unexplained anaemia or fatigue
- Feeling of incomplete bowel emptying
These signs may be subtle or mistaken for other conditions, which is why regular check-ups and screening are essential, especially for older Australians.
